How You Feel About What You Think…

Think of a very simple question to which you very clearly know the answer (“do I like the color blue?” or “do I hate shopping?”). Now sit quietly and ask yourself that question out loud and answer it truthfully. Take a few breaths and notice how your body feels.

Ask yourself the same question out loud again and, this time, answer it incorrectly. Take a few more breaths and notice how your body feels.
Do you notice tension anywhere in your body or in your breathing? Does your posture change?
How different does it feel to hear yourself in each situation?

Try this with different questions or with a more complex or nuanced question. Try this with a question to which you are unsure of the “right answer”. Try speaking out the possible outcomes of a decision you are trying to make. It can be fun (and enlightening) to do this with someone else as they may notice things that you haven’t.

Building awareness of how our body responds when we answer questions or describe our choices aloud helps us build connection between our conscious brains and our bodies, giving us deeper access to all of the wisdom within us.
